An incident has occurred resulting in a serious injury to an operative. The employee was working as part of a team excavating a trench parallel to a water main where deep excavation is being carried out under a foul sewer. The employee was helping to remove a mass of concrete found in the trench line. Following the removal of the concrete, a 45° bend on the water main separated, causing the trench to collapse and flood. As a result, the operative sustained multiple fractures and is in intensive care in hospital and is expected to be absent from work for six months.
