Food And Drink Key Themes For 2020

Key View: In 2020 we believe that the food and drink segment most exposed to consumer purchasing shifts is meat. Meat consumption in some key consumer markets is already starting to decline, and we believe that four drivers will remain pertinent to this trend, but note the risk of a fifth - meat taxation. It is not just demand-side pressure driving declines in meat consumption, on the supply side the emergence of alternative protein options is offering consumers a substitute to traditional meat. In 2020 we predict three new trends emerging in the alternative protein segment. The food security angle as a driver towards the adaptation of alternative proteins has again been highlighted in China following the African swine fever outbreak, and the rise in the price of pork and other meat in the country fed through to meat prices ticking up globally. This highlights China’s growing impact on global food prices. We believe that the sustainability spotlight, while remaining on plastic waste produced by the food and beverage sector, will expand and lead to a greater focus on food waste. Sugar consumption and government drives to encourage a decrease through sugary drinks taxation will continue in 2020, but we believe that there is growing impetus for the war on sugar to expand into other food and beverage segments.
