What Cities Can Do to Improve Gender Equity in Youth Sports

Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2404 (Chapter 852, Statutes of 2004, Steinberg) last September, making California the first state in the nation to enforce girls' civil rights in community athletics in local jurisdictions and special districts. AB 2404 is about building a community institution that respects the principle of fair play. All children and youth need to be active, especially now given the alarming epidemic of childhood obesity and prevalence of sedentary lifestyles in our nation. And our daughters should have the same access to fields, resources and play time as our sons.
