Using the example of two representative types of unalloyed and low-alloy grades of cast steel, the paper discusses whether in production welding the customary three-stage procedure of the technical standard can be reduced to a two-stage procedure. It is shown that in the case of GS-C 25 the initial normalizing or quenching and tempering treatment usually applied is not necessary, instead it is possible to weld with appropriate quality in the as-cast condition. Only afterwards is normalizing or quenching and tempering necessary. Stress relieving can also be dispensed with. With GS-17 CrMoV 5 11 also a reduction in the number of process stages is possible in principle, but because of the high hardness of the as-cast condition it is technologically more difficult to control.
