To guarantee the safety of welded steel structures, not only the strength but also specifically the toughness must be taken into account. In addition to carrying out the known tensile and notched bar tests, it is necessary with the help of fracture mechanical methods to determine quantitative parameters which allow conclusions to be drawn on the failure behaviour of large specimens. The toughness properties of the fine grained structural steels S355N (StE 355), S355M (BStE 355 TM), S460M (BStE 460 TM) and S500Q (StE 500V) after submerged arc welding were determined by three-point bending tests and notch opening displacement tests.
