To achieve the same properties in welded joints as in the base metal, one important factor is the selection of the filler metal and another is establishing the welding conditions. In the oil and gas industries, welded joints occur between stainless superduplex steels and austenitic acid-resistant steels. The question of which filler would be satisfactory for this was investigated with tungsten inert-gas (TIG) welding using, as an example, 12 mm thick sheets and thin-walled pipes (1.65 mm thick).
