Wear-resistant special structural steels - production, processing and application

The wear resistance of steels is primarily determined by their hardness and thus by their carbon content. On the other hand, in order to improve their weldability and to reduce their susceptibility to cold cracking, the objective is to lower or optimise the alloying contents. High-strength steels with high wear resistance must possess not only high hardness but also sufficient toughness and high deformation resistance. The present state of knowledge with regard to the production and processing of wear-resistant steels is shown. In this respect, thermal cutting and welding are also considered and some examples of applications are specified.
