Gerry Smith investigates two types of solid filler wire for mechanised welding of high strength (X70 and X80) line pipe steel. To investigate the properties of two types of solid microalloyed gas metal arc welding (GMAW) filler wires for use on high strength linepipe steels, welding trials were carried out using a triple deoxidised (Si-Mn-Ti) filler wire, Bohler SG-Pipe (ER70S-6 classification) and a nickel, molybdenum bearing triple deoxidised (Si-Mn-Ti-Ni-Mo) filler wire Bohler NiMol-lG (ER90S-G classification) on X70 and X80 grade linepipe materials. Linepipe steels of these grades generally exhibit high strength and toughness coupled with good weldability.
