Newly developed, very low diffusible hydrogen, flux cored wires offer welder appeal and good mechanical properties for welding high-strength steels. Several types of high-strength steels are available today for fabricators. The quench and tempered types, which include HY-80 and HY-100, require controlled preheat and interpass temperatures to prevent hydrogen-assisted cracking in the heat-affected zone. More recent developments of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, such as the HSLA 80 and 100 grades, and thermomechanically controlled precipitation hardening steels, can usually be welded with lower preheat and interpass temperatures because they are less susceptible to hydrogen-assisted cracking problems.
