Laser variable shaping optics (LSV optics) using linear-polarisation was applied to carbon steel CO_2 laser quenching and the absorption properties were analysed. In addition, the inclined material was irradiated with a linear-polarised beam and then laser quenched; the depth of the hardened layer and the temperature distribution were analysed. The main results obtained may be summarised as follows: For the uncoated (bare steel) specimens the absorptivity using random polarisation was low at approximately 20%; the graphite coated steel specimens had a high absorptivity of approximately 40% but this was almost constant irrespective of the incident angle.
