In May of 1981 at San Jose, CA I attended my first SAWE Conference. That was when I experienced what became my first mentoring lesson. I had asked Tom Oole several questions and he took me aside and briefed me about details of what is now SAWE RP-8. At that time it was a military document and later SAWE adopted it as a Recommended Practice. The exchange of that knowledge greatly accelerated my understanding of mass properties and certainly enhanced my career. We need to continue to replicate similar mentoring experiences not only in our daily offi ce relations but also in our SAWE activities, whether formally or informally. Much of the mentoring success relies on the young, inexperienced engineers asking questions. SAWE experts, like Tom, are open to sharing knowledge so please take advantage of this valuable opportunity.
