Herbicides are important components of agricultural pro- duction systems, but their use is often limited by the survival of uncontrolled woody species. The effectiveness of a her- bicide may change due to changes in the composition of the weed population. Development of herbicide resistance within existing weed populations and changes in weed pop- ulations due to herbicvide use and cultural practices have provided important stimulus to the search for new herbi- cides.
