One night in the summer of 1969, the rocky veneer of an ancient, forested mountain chain was simply sloughed away—liquefied from torrential rains. One hundred and fifty-eight residents became entangled in rolling waves of timber, rock, and cold water and were hurled downhill. Today, their remains are entrenched in the damp coffer of the earth beneath Nelson County, Virginia; victims of Hurricane Camille. Was this a once in a lifetime event—or simply part of a regional pattern, the occasional violent interchange between orography and tropical energy?
