Summer's heat wore on from the Plains to the East Coast, boosting monthly temperatures as much as 4 to 6℉ above normal from central Texas to eastern Oklahoma. Meanwhile, readings averaged more than 2℉ below normal in parts of the West. Despite the cooler weather, western wildfires charred hundreds of thousands of acres of trees, brush, and grassland from California to Montana. Farther south, however, an active Southwestern monsoon continued to pound the Four Corners region with heavy rain.
