Much of southern and central Canada experienced below-normal monthly means during May, in spite of occasional suggestions of summer conditions when temperatures reached or exceeded 30℃ (86°F). Cold anomalies were most pronounced in the prairie provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, where temperatures were 1 to 5℃ (2 to 8°F) below average. A semi-permanent low over ice-covered Hudson Bay and an associated trough from the Northwest Territories into Quebec produced a pronounced northwest wind flow over much of this considerable area.
