Alaskan weather

High pressure aloft persisted west of the Alaska mainland for the first three weeks of January. For the remainder of the month, southerly winds held over the western part of Alaska much of the time. The result was cold, quite dry weather over western Alaska; this was moderated by the southerly flow during the last 10 days. In the middle of the Interior, and on the central Kenai Peninsula, precipitation was as low as 10 percent of normal. The pattern was the opposite over the Yukon Territory, the easternmost mainland of Alaska, Southeast Alaska, and Kodiak Island. In these areas, periodic onshore flow from the North Pacific brought in above normal precipitation and temperatures well above normal.
