As the month began, low pres' sure over the Beaufort Sea strengthened, bringing colder air down over the mainland. At the same time, southerly winds were blowing over Southeast Alaska. From February 8-22, weak high pressure aloft settled over the mainland and low pressure aloft held over the Gulf of Alaska. Temperatures warmed in the Interior and the southern mainland, starting with a mild Chinook on February 6, followed by near record high temperatures in the Interior on February 18. The Interior had some areas of light freezing rain on February 18-23. Inflow of cold air from the Beaufort Sea resumed on February 24 and continued over the mainland through the end of the month. Southerly flow continued over Southeast Alaska.
