Circulation aloft over the Alaska mainland became weak in the first week of February. This remained the case until February 17, when strong southerly inflow developed over the Bering Sea coast. A vigorous disturbance in this flow moved from the southeastern Bering Sea across the mainland on February 18-20. Strong westerly winds aloft continued over the Aleutians and reached the mainland and Southeast Alaska on February 20, and exited Alaska to the Yukon two days later. On February 23 and 24, high pressure aloft built over the mainland and the Gulf of Alaska. Strong, high-energy flow originating between 25 and 30 degrees north Latitude extended up to the west coast of Alaska. A powerful disturbance from the Bering Sea moved rapidly over the mainland, and was followed by moderate, cold northerly flow.
