July was a rather quiet month in Alaska. A series of low pressure systems-none of them very strong-moved over the eastern Aleutians into Southwest Alaska and the Gulf of Alaska during the month, with little consequence. The important feature during nearly all of July was persistent low pressure over the Arctic-the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, which at times caused gale force winds. Frequent southwest winds over the Arctic coast were an important factor in holding the pack ice in the Chukchi Sea hard ashore from Wainwright to Cape Halkett.
