Temperatures were closer to normal over much of the state than much of the winter, though there were exceptions. The North Slope and Brooks Range was again significantly warmer than the long-term average. At Barrow, the average temperature for March was -4.8℉, making this the third warmest March on record: only March 1998 and 2002 were warmer. However, combined with the frequently mild weather since last autumn, the October through March cold season average temperature was well above normal over much of mainland Alaska, and some places in western Alaska, including Cold Bay, McGrath, Kotzebue, and Barrow, had the warmest six-month cold season of record. At the other end of Alaska, the Southeast Panhandle was again cooler than normal during March, though not as far below normal as during February.
