Scientists of different disciplines often don't have an opportunity, or an inclination, to share the details of their work with each other. But when they do, strange partnerships can form. Such was the case when atmospheric scientist Nick Ault teamed up with marine biologist Jerry Shay to mine his data set on fish migration. Both men are professors at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, but their professional paths never crossed until a conversation on the golf course revealed a key overlap in their work-one that could change the way forecasters predict the severity of tropical storms.
