The highlight of October over Alaska was the exceptionally dry conditions that occurred over a large portion of the state. Every long-term climate site along the eastern Gulf of Alaska coast and the Panhandle had either the driest or second driest October of record. Among locations that had the driest Octobers included Yakutat (14% of normal), Cordova (16% of normal), Juneau (30% of normal), Sitka (37% of normal), and Ketchikan (38% of normal). The dryness extended into mainland Alaska, with some places in the Interior recording almost no precipitation at all. Northway had a monthly total of just 0.01 inch and Fairbanks 0.02 inch. At Northway, this was the driest October of record; at Fairbanks, it was the driest in more than a century. Regionally, 12 of Alaska's 13 climate divisions had a top-10 driest October, but the Aleutians saw the eighth wettest. For Alaska as a whole, the National Centers for Environmental Information ranked this as the driest October of record (since 1925).
