Only four months after the June 1950 invasion of South Korea by North Korean forces, the Korean War looked to be coming to a quick ending with a decisive Allied victory. United Nations forces had just taken the strategically significant port city of Incheon, and two weeks later they liberated Seoul. By mid-October of 1950, the North's Korean People's Army lay in ruins and Allied forces were surging northward with the goal of political reunification of the peninsula by year's end. This momentum would grind to a dead halt, however, deep in the Taebaek Mountains of North Korea-due to not one, but two surprise enemies.
