When Kodak released its mass-produced box camera in 1888, it introduced the medium of photography to a new class of users. With its simplicity of operation and catchy advertising slogan,"You press the button-we do the rest," the relatively small handheld camera opened up a world to amateur photographers that previously had been reserved for professionals. In doing so, it also challenged the notion that photography could be a serious art form.One person who initially saw the rise of the ubiquitous handheld camera as an affront to serious photography was Alfred Stieglitz, who helped champion photography as an artistic endeavor throughout the 20th century-both through his own work and through his publications, including the quarterly journal Camera Work, which he edited and published from 1903 to 1917.
