The tragedies of wartime often occur on the battlefield, but sometimes equally, if not more, devastating disasters can claim the lives of innocent civilians thousands of miles from the frontlines.On the morning of December 6, 1917, the French ship Mont-Blanc prepared to depart from Halifax, Nova Scotia, where it had arrived the previous evening after departing New York on December 1. The ship's cargo consisted of military-grade explosives, including TNT, as well as the highly flammable fuel benzole.
