For narrowboat buyers, the event is best known as a convenient place to see off-the-peg boats from the larger manufacturers: in contrast, there are few bespoke boats. But the secret of the show is that chandlery-type items can be picked up from the caravan stands which dominate the event, often at very competitive prices. This year's show has been significantly shortened, now running from Tuesday to Sunday rather than Saturday to Sunday. Though it might not have the carnival atmosphere of the IWA 'National', the style of Crick or the pizazz of the London shows, after almost 50 years, Birmingham remains a worthwhile visit for Midland boat-buyers.
