Avon bridge snares two narrowboats in two days

The dangers of venturing on rivers during strong currents were highlighted when two narrowboats became wedged on two successive days on the Warwickshire Avon at the narrow and historic Eckington Bridge, near Pershore. The boats were travelling in spite of the fact that the river level gauges at the narrow bridge, run by the Avon Navigation Trust, were showing red. West Midlands Fire Service rescued both sets of crew, but it was left to River Canal Rescue (RCR) to retrieve the boats themselves, with both operations stretching into the hours of darkness.
