In the small hours of Wednesday 26th September the bank of the Trent & Mersey Canal at Dutton Hollow (between bridges 211 and 212) failed spectacularly, sending a torrent of water and debris into the fields below. Luckily, the failure was anticipated, and some works had been completed only hours beforehand, limiting the length of affected canal and the quantity of water lost. The timing of this first major incident under Canal & River Trust management was unfortunate as it was the day before its first Annual Meeting.
