GOING GAILEY TO THE NORTH

I was interested to read your article on Gailey Canai Cruisers fleet (February WW). Our first canal holidays were with Gailey in the early 1970s. They were robust boats, if basic by today's standards, with only a kettle for hot water - but you did not have to stop every day to fill up the water tank! Speed was limited by the need to avoid breaking wash rather than by lack of power. In 1971 we hired the six-berth Eagle for a four-week trip up the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, with a diversion up and down the Macclesfield - the Peak Forest not being open.
