Lock named in honour of Lichfield restoration founder

The Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust has marked the 90th birthday of its president and co-founder Eric Wood by renaming Lock 18 on the Lichfield Canal in his honour. The ceremony was performed online on 5th June after the trust's annual meeting, also held virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions. Lock 18 is on the Fosseway section, newly restored following a Heritage Lottery Fund project. As a tribute, participants also watched a 20-minute YouTube video on Eric Wood's vision for the restoration of the Lichfield and Hatherton branches of the Wyrley & Essington Canal, starting in 1988. It's a rare honour for a living person to have a lock named after them. The last was possibly Mike Clarke, at Bank Newton on the Leeds & Liverpool in 2016.
