The cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a large, aquatic bird that's resident to the UK. It's seen on coastal and inland waters, and during winter its numbers are boosted by visitors from the Continent.Since the 1980s, the cormorant population here has increased due to legislation to protect the bird from persecution and the effects of pesticides. Colonies are now established across the whole of the country, helped by longer breeding seasons on inland waters compared to on the coast.
