MODELLING OF LAGOON PROCESSES - STATE OF THE ART

Wastewater treatment lagoons have been widely used in Australia since early last century, with a large proportion of wastewater in Melbourne and Adelaide still treated with this technology. Regional towns, cities, and industries also have a considerable reliance on lagoon treatment technology, with advantages of very low energy consumption, low operating costs and low required operating skills. As a large country with a need to reduce our energy intensity and increase the reuse of water for irrigation, lagoon processes offer an attractive opportunity to minimise the cost of wastewater treatment whilst providing the buffer volumes necessary to produce reliable quality water for reuse.
