Reticulation means pipes, pipes, pipes, and the business is growing for a number of reasons. One is the rapid expansion of potable water supply and sewerage reticulation as the population increases, second, the vital need to reduce leakage and third, the increasing emphasis on recycling, fourth, new sewerage connections to central treatment plants to protect the environment, and last but not least, the need to check and where necessary, rehabilitate old sewers, some of them, in our inner suburbs, over 100 years old. Add to these the upgrading of old irrigation channel systems. Most pipes are still laid in open cut, but increasing numbers of projects are taking advantage of the relatively new and rapidly developing techniques of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and micro-tunnelling. But 'trenchless technology' also covers high-tech CCTV inspections, in situ repairs and relining, and the 7th National Conference of the Australian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) focused half the papers on such asset management topics.
