In communities where biosolids is applied to agricultural lands and fields, debate often focuses on the risks from pathogens in biosolids, human exposure to aerolised biosolids particles (bioaerosols) and emerging pathogens such as the SARS and H1N1 viruses.rnThe keynote speakers for AWA Biosolids Specialty Conference on 2-4 June 2010 in Sydney are Professor Ian Pepper from Arizona Water Institute and Dr John Novak from Virginia Tech in USA. Professor Pepper has spent many years studying pathogens in soil and biosolids, has authored a number of scientific publications and has recently finalisedrnresearch on risks from emerging viruses like SARS and prions (a defective protein particle, the infectious agent in mad cow disease or BSE) in biosolids. Dr Novak is highly regarded for his knowledge on the mitigation of odours associated with biosolids and which can be managed through the wastewater treatment process.
