DECENTRALISED SEWERAGE SERVICING - EVALUATION OF A YELLOW WATER, GREYWATER AND BLACKWATER TRIAL

The Kinglake West Sewerage Project was undertaken by Yarra Valley Water (YVW) to determine whether it was possible to deliver a more sustainable sewerage solution in a developed, unsewered 'backlog' area, as identified in theoretical studies. Many innovative concepts and products were tested as part of the project including urine-diverting toilets, yellow water harvesting, greywater systems and STEP tanks. The post-implementation review found that, although environmental improvements were delivered, they were not as high as predicted and the application of new concepts came at a higher cost.
