Most water treatment strategies result in the formation of DBPs, but as long as mitigation strategies are in place then the chloramination process offers considerable advantages over other technologies. Greater awareness is likely to result in an increased uptake of chloramination as the preferred method of distributing water by utility companies worldwide. Only a few EU nations currently practice chloramination for residual disinfection of distribution systems and to reduce DBP formation. However, the recent revision of the EC Drinking Water Directive and the Water Quality Regulations in the UK, which allow more nitrite in chloraminated waters, means that take-up of this method is now likely to increase significantly. In the UK, most utilities or water companies apply chloramination to some extent. More are now planning to introduce it more widely; those already using it are pleased with the results. And if the water companies get chloramination right, and if treatment means removal, then the only DBP left will be water.
