Sewer rehabilitation has lagged well behind potable water mains renewal and construction in terms of priority around the developed world, not least because of sewer maintenance organisations' notoriously tight budgets. But this is not to say that the need is not there ― across the developed world, observers are reporting a vast amount of potential work. In the US, the scale of work needing to be undertaken is staggering. Jay Reed of US consultant Earth Tech says: "America's wastewater system is in desperate need of repair, with some systems more than a hundred years old. Nationwide, systems face a $12billion shortfall in replacing ageing infrastructure and complying with existing and future federal water regulations."
