New Orleans, the city they call the Big Easy, has a relationship with water that is anything but. Built somewhat haphazardly in a bowl-shaped depression, mostly 2m below sea level, this quintessential southern city's flood protection was the complex network of canals, levees and sea walls that kept back lake Ponchartrain to the north and the Mississippi river to the south.
