Action on the Amazon: aiming for basin-wide management

A Global Environment Facility-funded project, launched recently by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is designed to help protect the forests and waters of the Amazon basin by enabling its ten million inhabitants to conserve and better manage these critical resources. UNEP executive director Klaus Toepfer welcomed the initiative, announced at the GEF Third Biennial International Waters conference in Brazil in June, saying he believed it would play an important part in helping the region meet its Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The goals include targets for poverty reduction and reversing the spread of diseases like malaria, the empowerment of women and the provision of safe and sufficient drinking water.
