A conference forming part of an international initiative to address the problems of globalisation is to be held this September, us STEDMAN looks at how this initiative hopes to use the concept of global public goods as a way of improving provision of water supply and sanitation. 'A silent humanitarian crisis' is how a new report, Achieving healthy urban futures in the 21st century, describes the global deficit in the provision of water supply and sanitation. This report was released at the end of January as part of a global initiative on globalisation. It examines the new political momentum in this area and seeks practical ways to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on water and sanitation.
