Institutional arrangements and drinking water quality

The August issue of Water21 included our first article in a series on the principles of the Bonn Charter for Safe Drinking Water. That looked at the role of water safety plans. In our second article, Annabelle May, Joaquim Pires; Michael Rouse outline the importance of institutional arrangements. The recently published Second UN World Water Development Report, 'Water, a shared responsibility', highlighted that the insufficiency of water supply is often due to inefficient supply of services as opposed to water scarcity. Such inefficient services also have an impact on the quality of drinking water and are often the result of inadequate governance, which fails to clearly establish institutional and legal frameworks in which water is managed.
