Xiaomin Liu and Mark Levine look at Beijing's efforts to increase the sustainability of its many and varied urban water demands and put forward recommendations for future management of the city's resources. China's urban economy has developed rapidly over the past two decades, exacerbating the competing demands for water among different user groups. The urban water shortage is pervasive and will only get worse, as the urban population is projected to double in the next 20 years from the current 350 million. Increasing groundwater contamination and surface water pollution arising from the country's rapid modernisation have further reduced available freshwater resources.
