Assisting Africa

Africa's water challenges are on such a scale that there are any number of initiatives underway to improve the situation. LIS STEDMAN looks at developments, and at the neighbouring region of the Middle East. The Fourth "World Water Forum, held in Mexico earlier this year, attracted press attention for its warning that some countries were unlikely to hit their Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation targets, with the official declaration noting that a 'substantial increase of resources from all sources, including domestic resources, official development assistance and other resources will be required if developing countries are to achieve the internationally agreed development goals and targets'.
