Only affordable sanitation systems can be sustainable

The different examples of relatively sustainable sanitation systems do not allow the conclusion that projects with similar cost relations are successful. Appropriate responses to peoples' expectations, sound technical systems, institutions and regulations, and competent staff are of course necessary. Nevertheless, high costs, especially for operation and maintenance, which cannot be covered from user fees or reliable transfers are the most important risk for sanitation systems.Years back.WHO put the affordability of water and sanitation at 5% of household income and this is probably still a valuable figure when it comes to water supply in very water scarce countries. However, it might not necessarily reflect peoples' priorities when it comes to paying for sanitation services on top of an existing water supply.
