This is my first column and, although you will see it following the Montreal Biennial World Water Congress, I am writing it two and a half weeks prior to its start. I am also looking at David's column in the August 2010 issue of Water21 entitled 'The future of IWA' and want to pick up on the theme that he has introduced. The future of IWA is, indeed, in the hands of its members. As David points out, we have collectively accomplished much in the past several years, but this only positions us for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. The world needs us to provide leadership to move our profession and industry forward at a much faster rate (twice as good and twice as fast) to meet the challenges of the future. This will make at least some (if not many) of our colleagues uncomfortable. Change always has some uncomfortable aspects, but it can also be energizing. As the leaders of the profession we need to help our colleagues with the transition, but also to move forward to make the contributions needed and for the benefit of the profession. The question before us is not do we move forward, but how do we?
