Plant collaboration for efficient sewage treatment: exploring the potential for integrated wastewater management

Any forecast is difficult, but investments in infrastructure must be designed for the long term. Predicting dramatic changes, especially those following the global credit crunch and the European Union / US public debt crisis, it is quite clear that nobody can perfectly plan the design and capacity of sewage treatment plants (STPs), i.e. to have the exact size and technology required to meet needs one or two decades after the design is completed. In other words, most STPs are either too large or too small, or have technologies not matching the actual needs.
