By the 1920s scientists understood that certain microorganisms are able to store polymers.These bio-based polymers, known as poly-hydroxyalkanoates or PHA, can be compounded into bioplastics with properties comparable to polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP).What is more remarkable is that unlike PP and PE, bioplastics of PHA are completely biodegradable.Thus, PHAs are bio-based and biodegradable polymers that can be used as a platform for production of fine chemicals or compounded into bioplastics for a wide range of applications. In PHA industrial activities to date, the biomass required for producing PHA is developed from scratch and one of the key hurdles for the growth of commercial PHA applications is price. In order to grow a PHA-produc-ing biomass from scratch, carbon, nutrients and energy have to be supplied and that influences price.
