System control for Saudi desalination

Scotland-based engineering company Booth Welsh has been awarded the contract to design and manufacture a process control system for a major utility company in Saudi Arabia, for phase two of its new seawater reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant. The plant is being built to supply potable water and process water for the industrial city of Al Jubail. Phase 2 will have a production capacity of 58,500m~3/day, adding to an existing Phase 1 capacity of 30,000m~3/day. The plant will have a series of transfer and treatment stages, starting with roughing filtration, followed by automatic strainers, Ultrafiltration membrane units, sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) trains and brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) trains.
