Busan is Korea's second-largest city, with a population of over 3.5 million.When the city planned to replace its 20-year-old Suyeong wastewater treatment plant, it faced a number of issues, including strict discharge effluent quality requirements and limited land for construction. As Busan has developed into a bustling city, a residential area has developed around the old plant.To meet the residents' desire to transform the old plant into an environmentally-friendly recreational facility, the new plant was designed to be completely underground, with a residential park at ground level.With Korea's urbanisation and development, constructing under- ground wastewater treatment plants is a growing trend.
