GE launches energy efficiency challenge

GE and Saudi Aramco have launched a $200,000 technology challenge to help improve the energy efficiency of seawater desalination, acknowledged as one of the industry's greatest challenges. Currently energy consumption can account for up to 70% of costs, according to a joint statement from the two companies, and the global production of desalinated water uses some 75.2 terawatt-hours of electricity per year - in domestic terms, enough to power almost seven million homes.
